Tommy and I grew up in the Minneapolis area, we loved it so much, we never intended to leave. However, as we learned more about our current food structure and the impact on the Earth, the animals and our health; we realized that if we wanted change, if we wanted something better, we had to do it ourselves. So, we began our journey to growing our own food, stepping back from the social norms of today's society and allowing life to take us where we are meant to be.
We packed up our three pups, got rid of many of our belongings and took the greatest leap of our lives; landing in Mondovi, Wi about 45 miles south of Eau Claire. We were fortunate enough to have met the Rabkin family, owners of Crazy Rooster Farm, who let us live on their farm taking care of cows, sheep, chickens and the land. We spent almost three years at the Rooster learning animal husbandry, principles of Permaculture, sustainable building techniques, becoming new parents, living with less and simply learning a new way of life. Our intention was to establish a homestead where we could produce enough for ourselves and pass the spoils on to our friends and family; in 2014 we were lucky to find a small 4.5 acres homestead just outside of Gilmanton, WI to begin to do just that. The first three years were spent repairing the home and the land (upload blog). Now that Folden Fresh Farm has been fully restored, we are able to cultivate honey, eggs, and vegetables in a healthy, nourished environment. Our honey and garlic is available for sale (here).
It is our hope to grow our community of like minded individuals and to offer a sanctuary for people to visit in order to reconnect with themselves, with nature and the way farms once were. We hope to use this space to share what we learn with anyone who is interested. We want to be a part changing how our current food system works and inspire others to do the same.
